AURick's Starter Motor
The new starter motor fixed the well known and documented 'Hot Start Issue' on my 2012 Tiger 800 XC. The itme was as described on JAX's website and fit my bike perfectly. Communication from the JAX team was great when the delivery got delayed due to unforseen circumstances. All in all, I'm a very happy customer with a now properly working bike again :) Thanks Rick's and JAX.
United StatesMotor seems well built, but has a thin, cheaply made pot-metal case and the terminal lug is easy to break.
I am installing one of these in my 2013 Triumph Tiger 800. I couldn't get it to seat past the O-ring so I took an extension and a rubber mallet and tapped it until it seated. When I removed the extension I noticed that I had knocked a hole into the case. So I removed it and took it apart, and using some JB Weld and the disappointingly thin pot-metal pieces that broke out, I reassembled them into the hole and sealed it good. The repair is almost invisible, but I shouldn't have had to do it in the first place. After the repair cured, I reinstalled it, this time careful to speak gently to it the whole time. Once it was in place, and bolted down, I attached the power lead to the power lug. I tightened and tightened and tightened until I realized the whole lug was spinning. Disappointed, I took it back out and disassembled it again, to see that the internal power lead to the positive brush had twisted off and broken. This cannot happen with the factory starter power lug, but then again the factory starter doesn't work... So I carefully trimmed the insulation back about an eighth inch so that I could re-solder the internal connection. I tested to make sure it was properly connected and not shorted, and re-assembled it. I haven't yet installed it for a third time because the heat index today is 110F. I'll maybe try again this evening. When I had it open the first time, I noticed that it is not lubricated at all on the inside. I used a puff or two of WD-40 brand spray lithium to lubricate the bearings and brush holders so that everything slips and slides nice. Come on Rick's! I'm sure that once this starter is installed it'll be great, but so far I am disappointed in it. I've spent more time repairing the new starter than I did disassembling the motorcycle to get to the old one.
